Merrillville Intermediate Students Learn about Careers

MIS-students-learn-about-Careers-Collage-2015Fifth Grade Merrillville Intermediate School students in Mrs. Mattioli’s Lifeskills class have been learning about careers. First students researched a career and then wrote a short essay about their career choice. Their research included information about their job responsibilities and required education. Each student also completed a job application in preparation for their upcoming interview.

Students then had the opportunity to do peer-to-peer interviews on ‘Career Day’. This gave them the opportunity to play the role of Human Resource Manager and the role of an individual interviewing for their career job. Students were informed in advance that they must act professionally through their whole interview experience in order to be hired. Most students shared that they felt really nervous as though they were in a real interview. All of the students in Mrs. Mattioli’s class were offered a job.

This week is also “College Go Week” here at M.I.S. “College Go” is designed to teach students in 5th and 6th grade what is college and why is it so important. Our school Guidance Counselor Karen Fatouros and our Social Worker Michelle Rogowski have planned a variety of mini lessons and activities for the whole school to help promote “College Go Week”.
