2015 5k Walk For The Hawks Was a Success for IUN Athletic Program

IUN-Walk-for-the-Hawks-Recap-2015Approximately one-hundred student-athletes, staff and RedHawk supporters participated in Saturday’s 2nd Annual Walk for the Hawks 5k fundraiser on the Gary campus.

“We had great weather and a great turnout from all of our supporters” said Director of Athletics Kristofer Schnatz. “In just two quick years this event has grown into part of our tradition here on campus” added Schnatz.

The 5k walk generated $9k this year, up approximately $1500 from the inaugural event in 2014. Student-Athletes, staff and supporters gain financial support through online gifts and 5k walkers. The funds raised during this event are used to support the student-athlete experience throughout the year.

“This event has the potential to continue to grow” said Schnatz. “Next year we plan to move this event to the spring which will allow us more time to encourage additional members of our campus community to come out and join us for a great cause. Our athletic program is focused on continuously improving the student-athlete experience” he added.

Schnatz recognized two individuals at the conclusion of the event in front of the large crowd with a special “THANK YOU” for the most money raised by a student-athlete (women’s basketball– Hattie Andrews) and the most money raised overall (Assistant to the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management – Mary Lee)!

“This event is only successful because of all the support of our friends, family and students” said Schnatz. “We are looking forward to another successful year of collegiate athletics on our campus” he added.

The next campus event hosted by athletics is a can food drive on October 14th at 6:30pm in the Savannah Center. Please contact the Office of Athletics for more information or to donate can food items.
