The Challenger Learning Center is proud to announce that NASA Astronaut and Crown Point native Jerry Ross will be part of its Space Race Glow Run Event on Saturday, Sept. 19.
The timed 5K run and 2K walk around the Purdue Calumet campus and Knickerbocker neighborhood of Hammond is ideal for first time runners or groups that want to participate in a healthy event together. The evening will include glow gear and black lights, LASER shows in the center’s planetarium, science demonstrations and a visit from Special Guest Michelle Ferro, Miss Collegiate Indy. Colonel Ross will be signing both his books, Spacewalker and Becoming a Spacewalker, which will be available for purchase that evening.
The nonprofit Challenger Learning Center provides educational simulations and teaching resources to area schools in an effort to inspire and encourage children to explore space, science and technology as potential career fields.
“Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the Challenger accident,” said Rebecca Manis, director of the center. “The legacy of that crew lives on in the science and exploration that is being performed daily on the International Space Station, throughout the science community and in the work being performed at every Challenger Learning Center across the world. The students who visit us will be the visionaries, explorers and leaders of the future, and events like this Space Race help us to continue to engage these students every day.”
