Calumet Revisited set for Tuesday, December 2nd

rot1The next session of Calumet Revisited will be held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m. at CCSJ. The speaker will be Cynthia Ogorek, who is a public historian and author based in Calumet City. Specializing in Calumet Region history, she has produced a series of three books on the region’s transportation history.

Her program on December 2 will focus on the Calumet River System and her current research on the Hegewisch community and its connection with the river.

Her previous books were titled Along the Calumet River and The Lincoln Highway Around Chicago. Her latest is called Along the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Rail Line.

Cynthia is a founding member of the South Suburban Heritage Association and has recently joined the I&M Canal Corridor Association’s speakers bureau. She is a member of the Indiana State Historical Society’s speakers’ bureau and served for many years on the board of the Calumet Heritage Partnership.

A native of the Calumet region, she received her master’s in U.S. history from Purdue University Calumet and has presented papers on historical topics at the Illinois State Historical Society history symposium and the annual conference of the South Suburban Heritage Association. In the spring of 2012, she spoke about Anna Symmes Harrison, our ninth First Lady, at Grouseland, Mrs. Harrison’s home in Vincennes, IN, when her husband was governor of the Indiana territory 1800-1812. Later that year, she presented a program titled “First Ladies and the Lincoln Highway” at the National First Ladies Library in Canton, OH.
