merrillville-pirates-logoOn Saturday, September 27, 2014 the Indiana Coalition for Public Education will host the premiere viewing of “Rise Above the Mark,” a documentary featuring education and the heartbreaking realities surrounding public education in the state of Indiana and across the U.S. The viewing will take place at the Merrillville High School auditorium, at 2:00 p.m. This very important event is open to the public at no charge.

Narrated by Peter Coyote, actor, author, director and screenwriter who has such film credits as Erin Brockovich and Jagged Edge, this revealing piece addresses how public schools are boxed in by corporate reforms. Education experts including Diane Ravitch, Linda Darling-Hammond, Pasi Sahlbert and others discuss how rules and regulations restrict vision, depreciate funding, demoralize teachers, and in turn students become test-taking machines. The opportunity to foster and develop creativity is lost.

A panel discussion will follow the film presentation and will consist of George Baranowski, President of the Lake Central School Corporation; Ricky Killon, Superintendent of District 4 West Lafayette Community School Corp., Tony Lux, retired superintendent Merrillville Community School Corp., and Earline Rogers, Indiana State Senator, 118th Indiana General Assembly, District 3.

The Indiana Coalition for Public Education is a bi-partisan non-profit organization whose mission is to focus public tax dollars on the K-12 education of public school students. A variety of issues are taken to the Indiana General Assembly opposing school voucher funding and expanding private school tax credits among others.
