Admissions Team Shines at Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Sheffield Manor

When it comes to senior care facilities, everyone wants assurance that they’re placing their loved ones in good hands. The Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center team recognizes how difficult it can be for both family members and residents to make the transition. No matter the patient’s circumstances, every staff member at Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Sheffield Manor Assisted Living goes above and beyond to ensure a quality experience.

The admissions and marketing team at Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Sheffield Manor make a point of communicating assurance to patients, residents, and family members. Gary Batty, Admissions Director, said that regardless of whether someone is looking into rehabilitation, assisted living, or long-term care, the key is to guarantee security and a high level of professional care.

“We want to be there for the families because we are the face,” Batty said. “We want to get them at that comfort level where they know there’s always someone there to support them and guide them. People want assurance that their parent or their sibling is being taken care of, and we’re able to give that to them.”

An outgoing person, Batty enjoys working with families.

“It’s a tough business in some respects,” Batty said. “But it gives you the opportunity to build new relationships, help other families out, and make sure they’re secure.”

Batty said that one of the advantages of Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Sheffield Manor is that it operates as an age-in-place facility; residents in assisted living can -transition into rehabilitation or long-term care if needed, making for a peaceful final chapter. Business Development Director Heather Shelton agreed.

“That’s really what sets us apart—not a lot of facilities offer long-term care,” Shelton said. “It’s pretty amazing to be a part of a family where residents can stay for the remainder of their lives.”

Batty has been in his industry for eight years, and Shelton has been in the marketing world for 10 years. Both said this company is different in all the best ways.

“I’ve been here for two weeks, and in my short time here, I can definitely tell that the teamwork is so amazing,” Shelton said. “It’s different than anywhere I’ve ever worked. We all come together in morning meetings, and if there are any questions or concerns or needs, everyone works together to get them taken care of. It’s really great to be a part of a team like that.”

Batty said that communication and heart both motivate the positive staff culture.

“We’ve got a terrific staff to work with,” Batty said. “We have a lot of caring people who work here; they want to be here for a reason, and that’s for our residents. That’s what makes it worthwhile for me when I go home at night. If I can do something for a family or a resident that benefits them, I feel my day’s pretty complete.”

Batty’s “partner-in-crime,” Admissions Coordinator Jennifer Halac, said her coworkers are just one reason she loves her job.

“I just love it here in general,” Halac said. “Everyone here kind of becomes your extended family. I love spending time at work because I love the residents and I love my coworkers.”

To welcome Shelton to her role as Business Development Director, the Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center distributed fliers introducing her. Because the team will be participating in Residential Clinical Service’s senior vendor fair at a Gary SouthShore RailCats game, the fliers are baseball-themed. Keeping in the “baseball blitz” trend, Shelton also includes Cracker Jacks, Big League Chew, and other ballgame staples when she networks with hospitals, physicians, and potential patients.

“Heather is really knocking it out of the park!” said Amy Nikruto, Extended Care’s Regional Director of Business Development. “This team always does.”

Aside from a stellar team, Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Sheffield Manor also boast an incomparable therapy team with cutting edge equipment, such as an AlterG (an anti-gravity treadmill!) Also impressive is the wide array of amenities and activities open to the community. From the ice cream parlor and movie theater, to the salon and activity rooms available to rent out, everything is designed to promote an active and fun lifestyle for residents, staff, and family, and visitors.

“It’s been proven: socialization is going to make you live longer,” Batty said. “The socialization we promote as a family in and outside of ourselves contributes to a better atmosphere. For Nursing Week, we made the nurses feel special and recognized them, too. In turn, that creates better care for our residents. Those are the nice things that make you want to come to work in the morning. If you can go to work knowing you’re going to feel good about yourself that day, it spreads to your other staff, and it spreads to the residents.”

For community activities, next up is The Garbo: The Musical, a one-woman show open to the public at 1:30 p.m., June 28 at Sheffield Manor. Batty called ita fun engagement that links residents to their pasts. Refreshments will be available
