Korellis Roofing Supports Education with First Annual George & Harriet Korellis Scholarship Awards

Family values held strong at Korellis Roofing as Pete and Susie Korellis presented the first annual George & Harriet Korellis Scholarship awards Thursday night at the family event that started with a cocktail reception and ended in applause inspired by equal parts pride and support.

“Education, once given, can never be taken away,” Susie Korellis said. “That’s the most important gift, and we feel blessed to be able to share and extend to all of you.”

Presenting the awards was Becky Korellis, who spoke not only of the value of education, but also of doing the right thing with your whole heart.

“George and Harriet would be incredibly proud that the work that they started continues and has expanded into programs like these scholarships, which will influence future generations.”

The scholarships of up to $5,000 were awarded to eight students who either work for, or have parents who work for, Korellis Roofing. Pete, President and CEO of Korellis Roofing, spoke of the delight his late father, George, would feel knowing “these guys that they’ve seen for so many years, that their kids, grandkids, and family members are getting these scholarships. It’s really neat to be able to do this.”

The winners were chosen based on a blind review of the criteria that was designed to give a complete picture of each candidate including academics, community service, extracurricular activities, work experience, leadership and character, letters of recommendation, personal essay, and financial need. The certificates were handed out in alphabetical order as follows:

Hannah Bailey, a Munster High School graduate who is currently enrolled in the Dental Hygeine program at Indiana University Northwest. Bailey was active in Girl Scouts- near and dear to Becky Korellis’ heart- and played ice hockey. She worked and saved her money to be able to afford the first year of college on her own.

Alexandria Christensen, a Lake Central High School graduate who is currently majoring in Psychology at Purdue University Northwest with a minor in English and hopes to attend graduate school at Pacific University in Oregon.

Michael Christensen, a senior at Lake Central, who plans to major in Computer Engineering and even built his first computer from scratch when he was just a freshman.

Hannah Fionda, a senior at Lake Central, who is described by her employers as extremely dependable and trustworthy.

Danielle Morang, who received her award in absentia due to work commitments, is a Lake Central graduate currently enrolled in the School of Nursing at Loyola University and maintains a 3.61 GPA.

McKade Schuldt, a soon-to-be sophomore at Ball State University majoring in Entrepreneurial Management, who is employed, volunteers in his spare time, and plays tennis.

Haley Slavis, a current Korellis Roofing employee who graduated from Lowell High School, graduated from Purdue and is currently pursuing her MBA at Purdue Northwest.

Elizabeth Swets, Lake Central graduate, is pursuing a nursing degree at Indiana University Northwest and described by her employers as being hard working, dependable and caring.

“All good qualities for a nurse,” Becky Korellis editorialized.

Congratulations to the recipients and their families, and special thanks to Pete and Susie Korellis for putting in the hard work wholeheartedly to create this scholarship program in honor of the values upheld and instilled by George and Harriet Korellis.
