Porter Physician Group Welcomes New Medical Oncologist Janet Retseck

Porter-Regional-Hospital-Janet-RetseckA Northwest Indiana native has returned to the area to care for patients with cancer, bringing with her a special interest in patient-centered care and advances in immunotherapy. Janet Retseck, M.D., says she is pleased to be part of the Valparaiso and Northwest Indiana community, helping patients as they go from diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. “This is an amazing time to work in oncology. New treatments are constantly emerging.”

Dr. Retseck, a Michigan City native, obtained her medical degree from Ohio State University College of Medicine, and completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. She then continued with a hematology-oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

For a year between residency and fellowship, Dr. Retseck also worked as a Primary Care Chief Resident at the William S. Middleton VA in Madison, Wisc. During this time, she was privileged to join the medical support team on a Badger Honor Flight taking more than 80 veterans, many of whom served in WWII or Korea, to Washington, D.C. “This is easily one of the proudest moments in my career. It was profoundly moving to see these Veterans visit their monuments for the first time and to witness the respect they were shown during every moment of the trip.”

Board-certified in internal medicine and board-eligible in hematology-oncology, Dr. Retseck treats all types of cancer and non-cancer blood disorders. Her areas of interest include breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, melanoma, and prostate cancer.

“The success of immunotherapy in so many cancers is especially exciting. All of my research in fellowship focused on helping identify ways to determine which patients might benefit the most from these new treatments that use the immune system against cancer.”
