We pass hundreds of signs each day, but how many people realize that one of the largest sign companies in the Chicagoland area is right here in Northwest Indiana? Located in an industrial park along SR 149 between Chesterton, Portage and Burns Harbor, Landmark Sign Group has proudly served the needs of businesses for the last 35 years.

Since 1983, Landmark Sign Group has worked to create quality, hand-crafted business signage. Shaun Ensign is Senior Project Manager for Landmark Sign Group and says that their goal is stated right in their name - they are in the business of creating landmarks for each and every one of their clients.

“We are a full, custom electric sign shop. We are in the business to create landmarks, which goes hand-in-hand with our name,” Ensign said. “We want to help businesses get noticed. We create signs that are handmade and fully custom, that attract the eye, and that both the client and the public can appreciate. We like to say that our work is a sign of excellence.”

Among their most recent projects is the installation of new signage for Wolf Lake Pavilion in Hammond, Indiana.

“We just installed a 12-foot x 30-foot electronic message center with a custom aluminum surround pole cover. It was just fired up this week. It’s a very high-profile sign that will be used to advertise concerts and other events there at the Pavilion. It’s one of the largest ones we’ve done,” Ensign said.

Signs not only advertise and identify a business, the very best ones say something about the business they represent. Ensign says that their company works with clients to design and create the best sign to fit their particular needs.

“Many times, clients look to our vision, trusting in our expertise in the industry,” Ensign explained. “Ideally, we like to consider the building where the sign will be installed. Are there any details that we can pull from? Is there brick in the building? Can we incorporate that into the sign? Cornices, columns, things like that, which we can pull from when designing their sign to make sure that it’s a reflection not only of their business but also of the location. A sign should blend into the building, it should complement the property well. Those things are key features which we like to incorporate into signs.”

Landmark handles all aspects of creating an eye-catching sign, from design to fabrication, installation, and maintenance. They even handle permitting so their clients don’t have to and most installations can be done in a day.

The use of retail and industrial signage has a long and rich history, reaching back hundreds of years, as far back as ancient Roman times, when signs were often made of stone or terracotta. Times have changed, and materials have come a very long way, with modern signs made primarily from aluminum, though some steel supports are used for added strength and durability.

So, next time you find yourself out running errands, going to the bank, the theater, or perhaps a doctors appointment, take a moment to appreciate some of the many beautiful signs that light your way. Chances are, it was made right here in our own backyard.
