A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Jessica Halliar

Born and raised in Demotte, Indiana native Jessica Halliar currently works as a dental hygienist here in Northwest Indiana. When she’s not in the office though she is giving back to her community one step at a time.

She started an organization called Sole Project, which brings together runners, walkers and anyone who wants to make a difference by coming together and using fitness to empower and give back to those in need.

“I want to bring healthier lifestyles to the community. I feel that there are not enough resources for that here, and I want to teach those that exercise can be a hobby,” said Halliar. “Sole Project is simple. Everyone needs shoes. We collect them, and we donate them to churches, hospitals or anywhere that will take them in the area.”

Runners host personal fundraisers during their training cycles, and the revenue goes towards providing shoes to those in need. Sole Project involves the community, not only runners, but anyone in need of motivation to make a lifestyle change to be the healthiest and strongest version of themselves.

“It’s not easy to decide that you’re going to be healthier or run a 5k or lose 10 pounds. Gyms make you feel that you already need to be in shape before you walk in the door.

Sole Project has all body types and doesn’t feed in the insecurities people already have. It’s a place where there’s no judgment. “We want to support people and help them feel confident enough to start,” said Halliar.

Halliar’s passion for running brings comfort to others. During her first marathon she raised money for a non-for-profit that empowers young girls. That gratification empowered her to create an organization that would bring runners together and run for a cause.

“I needed an outlet, so I decided to sign up for the Chicago Marathon. I knew that I would stick and commit to a plan. It gave me time to train and most importantly time to myself, which is so important to parents.

When you’re running, you’re in your own headspace and regain self-pride. People with Sole Project think the same way. I like to spread the importance of self-worth, and Sole Project encourages the importance of physical health,” said Halliar.

Halliar says it’s important to give back to the community. She is proud to give back by putting her best foot forward.

“A community is only as strong as its weakest link. If you build strong links, you’re setting up a great environment. Parents that live a healthy lifestyle tend to pass that onto their kids. I want to break some stigmas and bring healthier lifestyles in,” said Halliar.
